Illustrator Interview: Daniela Hasse

Here is our illustrator interview with Daniela.

Can you give us a short presentation of yourself and your art?

I am a brazilian designer, self-taught, married, and have two cats – Six and Ramona. I love what I do, and works mainly with music, magazines, art and fashion
. And I love buying colored socks, but I only use the white ones
.

How did you get started in the illustration field?
I’ve been drawing since ever – I don´t remember when I started it as a child, but I never stopped. I began professionally six years ago. I had a major in Portuguese / Spanish, but I tried my luck at a big fashion brand in Brazil, Colcci, as a textile designer
. After that, I moved from Blumenau (where I lived, in the South) to São Paulo, three years ago. I’ve been working as a free-lance just for one year, drawing from posters, illustrating magazines, some fashion stuff, packages, anything that comes around.

What are you working on right now?
Hundreds of different things. I’ve been drawing for a bi-monthly column at a teen magazine, I’ve been working on the visual identity for a new music festival in Brasil, which gonna happen in January, drawing the invite for a friend’s baby shower, and so it goes…

What are your favourite tools?
Can I say Photoshop? Actually, my first tool are just pencils and paper. I use the computer for coloring and making the fine adjustments to the designs, but everything starts at my drawing desk.

Please tell us about the process of making the EardrumsPop-cover! Is this the way you usually work?
Well, this is the way that I usually work when I make posters or covers – I listen to the band and try to make some visual sense of the music. But right now I´ve just started the first scratches, and I don’t know where it will lead us =)

Who / what are your greatest Visual Inspirations?
Oh, man, that’s a long list, let’s make it short. I like cats, the sea, clouds, flowers, birds and cute animals in general. Also, I like artists as Jaime Hernandez (from the comics “Love & Rockets), Kioskerman (an Argentinean comic strip illustrator), Gabriel Moreno, Yoko Furusho, Alberto Cerrieño Julia Pott, Tara McPherson, and also a lot of Brazilians, like FF Studio, mooz, Mcbess, Elissa Rocabado, Daniel Moraes, Vinicius Quesada, Laurindo Feliciano, Samanta Flôor. This list could last forever…

Is music or other forms of art an inspiration? If so, what do you listen to?
Music is absolutely an inspiration – it´s the major inspiration of all. Maybe sometimes I need silence to do something, but it will always come from music. For each work I have a specific soundtrack. I listen to everything from radio-station pop to Slowdive – you wouldn’t like to know what is my jogging playlist.

Describe an average working day.
Every day is different. I wake up, eat something. Check the mail, tweet a bit, read some stuff on the interwebs. Then I lunch with my husband and start to work – some days I can work till VERY late. I make pauses during the day to stay with my cats or go to the gym, watch some TV, read a book. It’s a free but at the same time very busy schedule.

How did you develop your style? Is it different now than when you started?
Since I started with fashion, I always needed to be very diverse in my style – each season needs a different kind of trace, different elements, different colors, I needed to learn different languages. Just now I’ve been starting to realize what my style is, but I think I’ll never crystallize it, it will always be changing.

What’s your favorite color?
Deep blue, definitely.

What are your future plans? Any exciting things you are looking forward to?
Make a Wilco poster. And children’s book. And cultivate some herbs, you know, parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. =)
