[...] “Jared Davis has made the cover-art for his own Far Concern-single himself. In this interview, he talks about the visual sides of his project. Can you give us a short presentation of yourself and your art? As a musician my lyrics and the sound recordings I use are quite descriptive and draw up images, so I suppose my artworks are a visual complement to my already rather ‘visual’ music. Aside from that I have always been a bit of a visual person; I studied Fine Art before getting more preoccupied with music, I used to draw lots of cartoons as a kid… How did you get started in the illustration field? Maybe at the moment my handling all of Far Concern’s artwork comes from an obsessive DIY (or control-freak?) attitude. What are you working on right now? Right now I am trying to dream up some visual ideas for video clips, let’s hope they eventuate! What are your favourite tools? Children’s toys, colourful things, any camera and free image editing software. Please tell us about the process of making the EardrumsPop-cover! Is this the way you usually work? Like my music I tend to run along with concepts that pop into my head without too much of a process other than that. Of course sometimes it doesn’t work out. For this cover the foam letters that kids use to spell their names just came up in my mind one day, so I went with it! Who / what are your greatest Visual Inspirations? With Far Concern I’ve been quiet inspired by ’80s ‘family’ adventure films, such as Mio Min Mio and Joe Dante’s stuff. Is music or other forms of art an inspiration? If so, what do you listen to? Definitely. Right now I’m listening very steadily to R. Stevie Moore, who has been releasing countless homemade pop recordings since the ’70s. Describe an average working day. Lazy! My music and the artwork that accompanies it only really comes about when I find the time. It’s a relief from the other work I do so I hope to keep it recreational in that sense. How did you develop your style? Is it different now than when you started? The initial designs I was working on for Far Concern made use of a lot of cut-up collages from children’s books and the like. In a way playing along with the sometimes naïve nature of my lyrics and songs. This has turned more into photography but I guess the childish elements are still there. What’s your favorite color? I don’t really have one, but as a kid it was green. What are your future plans? Any exciting things you are looking forward to?
