This is our illustrator Interview with Jess Marshall:

Can you give us a description of yourself and your art?

I’ve just finished my first year of an art degree at Manchester School of Art. I started becoming
interested in illustration during college last year and have been building my illustration portfolio for
around six months.

What are you working on right now?

I really like working on gig posters and have got a couple left to do. I’d really like to actually finish
drawing a zine this year and finish screen printing some tote bags.

What are your favourite tools?

Fineliners all the way! Photoshop too.

How do you begin / conceptualise a project?

When I do gig posters I always listen to some of the bands that are playing and try to interpret their
sound visually in my own way. Most of my other work is triggered by either music I’ve listened to,
something I’ve read or a place that I’ve been to.

Who / what are your greatest visual inspirations?

Music, DIY culture, train journeys, loads of other illustrators and comic artists like Kaye Blegvad, Luke
Pearson and Julia Rothman.

Is music or other forms of art an inspiration? If so, what do you listen to?

Definitely! I like anything that’s dreamy and noisy

. I think overall my two favourite bands would
definitely be The Magnetic Fields and The Mountain Goats though.

What are your future plans? Any exciting things you are looking forward to?
Finish university! I’d quite like to try freelancing for a couple of years afterwards and see how it goes.
Otherwise I’d love to go into teaching
